The image “http://www.laptopsarena.com/wp-content/uploads/htc-advantage-now-with-16gb-flash.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

HTC Advantage got updated. HTC announced for Mobile World Congress 2008 to add new software, more storage capacity and an enhanced keyboard.

The ultra portable PC comes with a new customized HTC Home today screen with one-touch access to e-mails, messages, calls, contacts and even weather forecasts.

Its TouchFLO software is enhancing the finger touch scrolling and web sites browsing, and there are included also Opera Mobile 9 and Google Maps.

Now the HTC Advantage has 16GB of Flash storage and a G-sensor which recognizes the display orientation improving the viewability.

More than that, the UMPC model lets users run programs via the projctor and TV output capability and comes with a nice 5-inch VGA toch-sensitive screen and a magnetic QWERTY keyboard for best ergonomics while working in the Microsoft Office applications.

It will come to Europe in March under the name HTC Advantage X7510, with WCDMA/HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks support, the 3.1MP camera, miniSD card slot, WLAN 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, the HTC ExtUSB miniUSB, HTC16 pin port, the 3.5mm audio jack with microphone, a 2100mAh Li-Ion battery, and powered by the Marvell PXA270 624 MHz processor and Qualcomm MSM6275.

Netbooks vs UMPC vs Ultraportable Laptops

In Small Mini Laptops, we cover every laptop computers that are 13-inch or below in size. We generally call them mini laptops, but in fact, they can be further categorized into 3 main groups: netbook, UMPC, and ultraportable laptops. In this post, we will briefly explain the definition and differences between these 3 laptop categories.

Acer Netbook
Netbook is a new term in laptop industry thats becoming popular in recent years. Its a small and low-cost computer that is primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing, and is relying heavily on the Internet for remote access to web-based applications. Compare to standard-size laptops, netbook has lower processing power (generally run on Intel Atom CPU), lower battery capacity, and lack of certain standard features in normal-size laptop such as optical/CDs/DVDs drive. Apparently, the most attractive characteristic of a netbook is the low-price which generally falls below $500, and can go as low as $200+. Size wise, netbook normally comes with either 8.9-inch or 10-inch screen. Some of the popular netbooks in todays market includes Asus Eee PC, Acer Aspire One, Samsung NC10, and MSI Wind.

htc UMPC
UMPC stands for Ultra-Mobile PC. It was originated from project Origami launched by Microsoft, Intel, Samsung, and a few others in 2006. The form factor for UMPC is defined as touchscreen mini-tablet smaller than eight inches with a resolution of at least 800 pixels wide. Due to their tiny size, many UMPCs comes with on-screen virtual keyboard instead of physical keyboard. Some UMPCs feature Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, webcams, fingerprint readers, stereo speakers, TV tuners, and memory card readers. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and WWAN connections are sometimes included as well.

Dell Ultraportable
Ultraportable laptop is basically a full-featured laptop, but with smaller size -- normally less than 14 inches screen, and weigh less than 2 kg (4.4 lbs). Other than size, an ultraportable laptop will have similar processing power and features as other standard laptops. Examples of ultraportable laptops includes the 13-inch Dell XPS, and the SR series, Z series, and TT series of Sony VAIO.

And that basically cover the 3 major categories of mini laptop that will be the main focus of this blog. Hope you get a clearer picture for each categories of mini laptop now after reading this post!

HP ProBook 5310m

HP ProBook 5310m Ultraportable Laptop

HP has a thing of business-savvy beauty on its hands with the ProBook 5310m. Why do I say that? Even the guys in the PC World Labs--who see everything under the sun--were impressed by its industrial design. The sleek black aluminum case, the supple texture on the undercarriage...the list goes on. Me? I was impressed with the $699 starting price (the review unit in our office sells for $899). When they werent ogling this slick, 13.3-inch, 3.8-pound, 0.9-inch-thin ultraportable, I grabbed the machine for my own testing.

Under the hood is Intels Core 2 Duo SP9300 2.26GHz CPU, backed by 2GB of RAM and an integrated graphics processor. Thats no scorcher, mind you, but it does run Windows 7 Professional and a few core programs (Office applications, photo editing software, and Web browsing, for instance) without balking. In fact, it has enough juice to cruise through PC WorldBench 6 earning a 99. Not shabby at all considering the size, weight and price. The battery life suffers as a result, lasting just a few minutes shy of 5 hours. Certainly better than the average all-purpose machine, but not the 6-to-7 hours advertised by HP spokespeople.

The 5310m adheres to that fine line between a computing status symbol (like, say, the HP Envy 13 or the Sony VAIO X series) and a reasonably powerful PC that actually lets you get your job done. And Id daresay that the ProBook 5310m presents a more down-to-Earth alternative to Dells fashionable Latitude Z600.

Dell XPS 15

The new XPS 15 (also called the XPS L501X) is a completely redesigned multimedia notebook from Dell. Sporting a JBL sound-system with subwoofer, NVIDIA GT420M dedicated graphics, and an Intel Core i5 processor, this system is designed with performance and entertainment in mind. In this review, we take an in-depth look at the new XPS and see how it stacks up against the competition.

Our Dell XPS 15 Specifications:
  • Intel Core i5 460M Processor (3MB cache, 2.53GHz)
  • 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 glossy display with LED backlighting
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT420M with 1GB DDR3
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 6GB DDR3 memory
  • 500GB 7200rpm HDD (Seagate Momentus 7200.4)
  • Realtek gigabit ethernet and Intel 1000 802.11b/g/n wireless
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery (56Wh)
  • Dimensions: 15 x 10.4 x 1.3-1.5-inches
  • Weight: 6.21lbs
  • MSRP: $899.99 (Closest configuration)
Build and Design
The new Dell XPS 15 has a silver on grey color scheme, using metal panels and plastic for the body. Compared to past XPS designs that were trend setters that distinguished themselves from the lower models, the new XPS doesnt seem to spark much visual interest. In theory, mixing alloy panels with a brushed metal palmrest and backlit keyboard usually yields good results. The redesigned XPS 15 doesnt seem to really set itself apart, though, from the standard Inspiron 15R until you take a much closer look. Standing back five feet, the panels look like average plastic on the exterior, and the body itself even seems more bloated than the 15R. Overall, it seems like Dell missed a big opportunity to make the XPS-series the unique notebooks they once were. The result is a rather bland looking multimedia notebook where its budget-oriented sibling --the Inspiron 15R--outshines it.

Nevertheless, the XPS 15 feels nicer than it looks. The metal panels on the interior and exterior add strength to the body, reduce flex, and give the notebook a high-quality feel. Holding the notebook for the first time is a weird experience, as most of the panels look like plastic until you feel the cold metal. The screen cover does a very good job at protecting the display from impacts and seems to resist flexing when opening the screen from one of the front corners. The inside of the notebook features a large brushed metal panel that makes up the palmrest and keyboard surround. The bottom of the notebook is completely plastic (including the access panel) but still resists flex and feels durable. The only problem we noticed was the high use of plastic clips holding most of the notebook together (in addition to metal screws).

Users looking to upgrade the Dell XPS 15 will find it easy or not so easy, depending on which components they are looking to swap out. The single access panel on the bottom of the notebook houses the two sticks of RAM, wireless card, and WWAN/TV tuner slot. To get at the hard drive, you must fully disassemble the notebook, which isnt a task for the faint hearted. We counted about 16 screws, but didnt want to go further and risk breaking plastic clips or gouging the trim around the perimeter. Thats an awful amount of work just to swap out a hard drive for a full-sized notebook.

Review Toshiba Satellite A300 02C

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2GHz CPU with 25 Watt TDP
  • AMD RADEON HD 3650 with 512MB of DDR2 RAM
  • 15.4" WXGA High-Definition Display With 1280 x 800 Resolution
  • 320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
  • 4GB 800MHz DDR2 System Memory
  • Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

Conclusion

One of Toshibas traits that always puzzles me is that they always stop short of making the unequivocally killer product. Last year they delivered the X200 - arguably the first mainstream gaming notebook - with its two 8700m GPUs that came up short against the cheaper and much faster Gateway P-6831FX. Its my perception that as good as their notebooks are; they tend to the more conservative end of the excite-o-meter.

The A300-02C doesnt deviate from this pattern. It is not cheap - $1,000 is a far cry from entry level in 2008. A brand name isnt enough to justify a premium anymore - therefore I think it was a mistake not to spec DDR3 system memory and GDDR3 video memory. I understand that it takes balance and compromise to deliver a competitive product but performance features are omitted here that would distance this notebook from its competitors and more importantly last years models that are being marked down right now.

A similarly performing Gateway can be had for $100-250 less using last years CPU (T5750) and GPU (RADEON HD 2600) and some lucky folks are walking out of Best Buy with clearance models at half the price of the A300-02C and about 90-95% of the performance.

In addition to the performance features left off, important portability features like a larger capacity battery are also missing. If this notebook is not targeted to gamers on the run, then it should at least include a proper battery. Poor battery life is only excusable when performance is very strong.

Like so many of the Toshiba notebooks I have reviewed, the A300-02C is good. Still, its not the fastest, sleekest or best value notebook you will find.

Pros:

  • Portable gaming performance in a small package
  • Solid construction

Con:

  • Small battery and poor stamina
  • Monetvina 2 does not show the expected gains in this configuration
  • DDR2 800 system memory instead of DDR3 1066
  • DDR2 1000 video memory instead of GDDR3 or GDDR4
  • User serviceability compromised
    • No access to MXM-II
    • No access to CPU
    • No access to Intel 5100
    • Empty drive slot with SATA connector removed
  • A little over-priced, easier to recommend at $800-850
